Atlas Mountains

You might have heard Morocco has some of the world most beautifull gravel roads and landscapes.
We made a trip in December 2022 going from West Morocco Agadir towards the North East entering the Atlas Mountains towards Imoulas before heading south again crossing Taroudant.
4 days on the bike experiencing an amazing culture with welcoming locals.

Based of the time of the year you might want to adapt your route plan as during winter you want to avoid snow or to cold temperatures above a certain altitude.

Our trip brought us up to 1200m seeing snow on the high peaks around us but no issue so far on our route.

Find our route & gpx at the bottom of this page.

When to go ?

Visiting Morocco all year, but going late summer, autumn or during spring might be the best time of the year to avoid winter conditions when going in the Atlas.
In the middle of summer you might have to deal with very dry and warm weather conditions.

Where to stay?

Finding accommodation in Agadir or Marrakech is easy, there are plenty of options.
When going in land we recommend to look on google maps and search on sleeping locations.
In land you can find guest houses and riads that are often not on the regular booking sites. You can contact the host directly most of the time on their website.

Plan your route

Using route builder applications such as Komoot will get you everywhere. Highlights, terrain surface, climbing percentages, forbidden roads are shown up front. This really helps to avoid situations you want to avoid.
We do recommend using the 3D satellite maps as well so you can study the terrain you get yourself into.
Our route is shared as an example, we recommend building your own based of the time of the year and your sleeping locations.
Starting from Marakesch is also a perfect starting point towards the Atlas.
