NICE

A trip to the Fench Riviera exploring the coast and the back country of Nice

The French Riviera

The French Riviera is where the Mediterranean meets cycling culture. From Nice to the quiet roads of the arrière-pays niçois, every ride moves between sea views, mountain roads and villages frozen in time.

Known for its unique light and slow lifestyle, the Riviera becomes something completely different once the road starts climbing away from the coast.

A place where cycling feels less like training and more like movement through landscapes.

Why the name French Riviera ?

The word “Riviera” comes from the Italian coastline stretching between Italy and the south of France.

Over time, the French Riviera became known for its Mediterranean lifestyle, warm climate and dramatic roads above the sea.

Today, it remains one of the most iconic cycling destinations in Europe.

Col d’Èze - Above the sea

The Col d’Èze perfectly captures the Riviera atmosphere.

As the road climbs above Nice, the Mediterranean stays visible behind every corner. A climb filled with light, sea air and cycling history.

Mythical for cyclists, the Col d’Èze became legendary through Paris–Nice often decided the overall race.

For decades, professional riders used these roads as training grounds before the season started.

Col de Braus — Perfect switchbacks

The Col de Braus is one of the most photogenic climbs in the south of France.

Its perfectly shaped switchbacks cut through the mountain, creating a road that feels almost unreal from above.

Once inside the climb, the Riviera becomes quieter. Pine trees, silence and endless corners replace the coastline.

La Turbie & the arrière-pays niçois

Perched above Monaco, La Turbie marks the transition between the coast and the mountains behind it.

From there, the roads open towards hidden villages, climbs like La Madelaine and the deeper landscapes of the arrière-pays niçois.

This is where the real Riviera riding mood begins.

Coffee stops, warm light and long rides between sea and mountains.

The Riviera cycling mood

Cycling on the French Riviera is about atmosphere as much as performance.

Early morning rides along the coast. Golden hour descents. Quiet cafés after long climbs.

A unique mix of elegance, nature and cycling culture.

And once you ride these roads at sunrise, it’s difficult not to come back again.
